For its first announcement at IFA, Sony Mobile introduced three new smartphones: the Xperia T, V and J. The first is already available for several months, but the Sony Xperia V has encountered many difficulties before landing within our borders. But the phone is very good on paper, because it offers features mid to high range with a 4.3 inch screen.

Available since a few days on the Sony E-shop and many e-commerce sites, it is launched in secret, unlike Xperia Z which is the subject of an extensive communication campaign globally. The Sony Xperia V is very interesting because it features a dual-core processor Qualcomm S4, LTE connectivity and all the expertise of Sony Bravia Engine screen, photo sensor Exmor R ....

Design of the phone

The design of the smartphone takes the Xperia Arc and Arc S (and consequently that of the Xperia T), the former flagship of Sony Ericsson in 2011. This form factor is very comfortable to handle and offer a real stamp on the phone. We note that does not include the embossed logo of Sony Ericsson Xperia as T, but it has not the new button "identity" On / Off. We regret that the whole phone is made of plastic, which comes in contradiction with the Xperia Z frame and glass. The same contour "metal" is merely imitation with glossy plastic.Distinctiveness and not least of this phone is that it is IP57 certified. It is therefore protected against dust, but also resists the effects of immersion in water up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. A sacrifice, however, was necessary to obtain this performance put caps on the audio jack and microUSB. Pines for the dock are gold and are perfectly resistant to these conditions.Sony-Xperia-V-Waterproof
Sony Xperia-V-Waterproof

Is increasingly rare in Sony, the battery is accessible and can be replaced by an equivalent or greater capacity (provided you change the back cover). This part contains the microSD card slot but the microSIM (microSD is placed just above the microSIM, which is not easy to understand when you discover the phone). In dimensions, we are disappointed by the V Xperia insofar as the screen is smaller than the Xperia T (4.3 against 4.55 inches), but the chassis has a similar size: 129 x 65 x 10.7 mm (Xperia V) 129.4 x 67.3 x against 9.4 mm (Xperia T). However, it is relative, because the format is easily transportable and mobile. We have not noticed a problem when our test period. However, this has a negative impact on the design that has large borders, especially on the top of the unit.Sony Xperia-V BatterySony-Xperia-V-Batterie
The red part is completely sealedOn the front, there is the 4.3-inch LCD technology with Bravia Engine 2 Engine. The colors are very beautiful to look at, but if you have an OLED device, you'll probably find a little too bland, too white yellow and black too bright. We discuss in detail this essential element of the phone in the next part of the test.Sony-Xperia-V-Haut
Sony Xperia-V-Top

On top of the phone, there is a 3.5mm jack hidden under a flap. On the upper part of the phone include the Sony logo accompanied by a multicolored notification LED, proximity sensors and light as well as the front camera of 1.3 megapixels. The speaker in the center is placed below the "glass surface", which quickly became problematic because any dust will slip through. The edges of the screen are slightly raised, which removes the appearance sharp as many phones Sony had hitherto: the grip is much more comfortable here.Sony-Xperia-V-Droite
Sony Xperia-V-Right

If you look at the right edge, there is the volume keys and the On / Off button. Adjusting the volume on this phone is problematic because the switch is very small. Since it is also very close to the other button, its use must be done carefully otherwise one will necessarily wrong button pressed. It is a serious lack of ergonomics especially when we look at the unused space on the slice.Sony-Xperia-V-Gauche
Sony Xperia-V-Left

On the other side, we find the microUSB 2.0 stashed under protection and two pins for a dock.Sony-Xperia-V-Bas
Sony Xperia-V Netherlands

On the bottom, there is the microphone, but also a slight protrusion of the chassis relative to the screen. On the Xperia Sola, was exactly the same principle, but the notification LED hidden in this place gives an interest in technical choice. Here we really wonder what is the point of this space. On the bottom you will notice a slot that allows you to detach the cover from the rear.Sony-Xperia-V-Dos
Sony Xperia-V-Dos

Let's precisely that part which is much more pleasant to the touch than the Xperia T: here was the "soft-touch" against a more granular on the flagship model of the brand in late 2012. On the top we find the 13 megapixel sensor in the center position (ideal position to prevent the fingers come to embed your photos and videos) with next to a microphone and an LED flash. On the bottom there is the speaker which is pretty powerful. We would have preferred it on the side of the phone (like the Xperia Z) or directly in front (like the HTC One), as soon as it is placed on a surface sound is immediately muted.Sony-Xperia-V-Haut-Dos
Sony Xperia-V High-Dos

To conclude this part design, V Xperia Xperia is better than T, but can not ankle Xperia Z. Several shortcomings hamper the: edges very important, the key issue is too small and the space on the bottom of the screen. Note however that unlike the competition comes to Sony mobile design unique and easily identifiable (if one omits the fact that the Sony has a couple of phones ...).The screenThe display of the Xperia V technology already enjoyed the Xperia Z, namely OptiContrast and Bravia Engine 2. The Bravia Engine 2 Engine applies photos and videos and can offer image quality even better. It adds contrast optimization in real time, improving sharpness, color management offers a high quality and noise reduction. The Xperia also embeds V OptiContrast technology which allows for less glare and better brightness, even with strong sunlight. When the screen is off, this panel provides a uniform black appearance. V Xperia also has a touch screen sensor-on-lens, which offers a brightness increased by 5% and allows for printing directly touching the screen.xperia_v_sensor_on_lens
xperia_v_sensor_on_lens

We tested the screen Xperia V with respect to competition and comparison is not favorable to him. Even the Xperia Z is often criticized for its too light in color comes out better. In this comparison, we have:Sony Xperia Z - V Sony Xperia - Sony Xperia TSamsung Galaxy Nexus - Nexus 4 LG - Samsung Galaxy Note 2 - HTC Nexus OneWhen we speak of a white screen, the LCD technology is still in its element, where AMOLED hardly be closer to the natural color. In our comparison, the Nexus 4 appeared as the best due to its high brightness and hue closest of all. Z is the Xperia ambush, followed closely by T and then the Xperia Xperia V. Of the three phones Sony a yellowish tint comes off as you can see below.AMOLED models are really a laggard on this game: the Galaxy Nexus is gray, the Galaxy Tab 2 is a little whiter but its brightness playing tricks on him. Finally, the Nexus One fully meets next preferring a purple tint.Sony-Xperia-V-Blancs
Sony Xperia-V-White

If the AMOLED are not comfortable with the white, however, is on black they stand because no pixel is lit, where the LCD trying to recreate the color of pixels on.In our comparison, the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note 2 above outweigh hand, closely followed by the Nexus One which seems slightly less deep black (is this because of the treatment of the glass?). Much further, we find the Xperia T, followed by the Nexus 4 (and its light leaks), the V and Xperia Xperia Z.We see that the choice vs LCD IPS (improved LCD) is not necessarily in favor of Sony. The manufacturer should perhaps consider switching to this technology is increasingly used by the competition.Sony-Xperia-V-Noirs
Sony Xperia-V-Black

Rather than discuss each color one after another, a pattern has been posted on our test phones. As you can see, it is quite difficult to pick a winner, because everyone has his faults and weaknesses:

Sony Xperia Z: too light

Sony Xperia V: too yellow

Sony Xperia T: too light

Samsung Galaxy Nexus: too dark and too "gray"

LG Nexus 4: A little too green

Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Brightness lower than other models

HTC Nexus One: too purple

If you look at the angles, Sony phones do not differ on this part, far from it.Sony Xperia-V-Angles-viewInterface and software additionsThe Sony Xperia V interface is identical to that of the Xperia Xperia Z or T (since updated to Jelly Bean). Unlike Xperia Z, we denote by disabling many bugs.Manufacturers play a double game with Android: they love to use the base operating system, but desperate to appropriate interface. Change some codes so it is sometimes difficult to navigate (Samsung TouchWiz, HTC Sense or LG Optimus UI), but others are smarter ... and this is the case of Sony. The color coding and graphics components are different, but entirely consistent with the basic version of Android.Sony-Xperia-V-Angles-vue
Sony Xperia-V Holo-Bugs

The interface of Sony is an excellent enhancement Android ... but if you dive on the software, there are many complaints. While we did not find any bug on Xperia Z throughout the term of the loan, the Xperia V proved less robust and optimized during the first hours of use. Some applications crashes are noteworthy. Xperia V also showed some weaknesses with accidental activation during combined use of GPS (with MyTracks) and playing music in parallel. All problems that really misrepresent the product because the material aspect is good and the software part is successful as the Xperia Z.OfficeSince Jelly Bean, Sony has finally lifted the locks that bridaient office. It is now possible to add up to seven, but also to define the main (the one that appears when you press the Home button). The office, you will be able to view very classically shortcuts to your favorite applications, folders and widgets. While the phone is running Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), Sony did not include the intelligent placement of components.Sony-Xperia-V-Holo-Bugs

Regarding widgets, you can use those Google apps or downloaded apps on Play Store, but also those of Sony. Some have the particularity to open in full size. As you can see below by clicking on the weather, then we can see the forecast for the next days. The same by clicking on the quick settings that offer a lot of shortcuts.

Finally, note that the display of multitasking has been reviewed by Sony, which of course the list of applications previously opened with an overview, but also micro-apps. These are applications that appear floating above the current application.Base include a calculator, a countdown timer, a memo and a voice recorder. You can find many more on the Play Store. This feature is certainly intelligent, but less advanced than the LG QSLIDE which displays several micro-apps at once and can also change the opacity.Sony-Xperia-V-Widgets

Yellow Pages (application system)Themes and notificationsThemes found on Sony Ericsson smartphones since the beginning of the Android brand and they have improved significantly since the transition to Jelly Bean. So far they did not change the wallpaper of the desktop, the screen lock and some subtleties in the settings screen, personalization is now much more advanced. It is now the entire interface that changes color. As you can see, the notifications have a different color, but also components Apps: switch, checkbox, buttons ... (theme Default and Non Holo).

Sony Xperia-V-Theme

Finish with notifications, thanks to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) take on a new dimension. You will be able to unfold (one or two fingers) to display more information. Sony applications are compatible and a vast majority of applications also Play Store.Backgrounds releaseUnlike the competition which offers a lot of options on the unlock screen, Sony is in sobriety. Found a shortcut to launch the Photo (handy since there is no trigger on the phone) and a widget to control music.Sony-Xperia-V-Ecran-Deverrouillage
Sony Xperia-V-Screen-release

The animation is quite successful release, because it is similar to elements that suggest the wallpaper on the desktop.KeyboardThe keyboard has not changed for several versions and this is both good and bad news. Start with its strengths, it offers:

correction of faults intelligent

several types of arrangement (such as feature phones, classic and foreign characters)

the support Swype

the ability to use several languages simultaneously

several themes (colors)
Sony-Xperia-V-Clavier
Sony Xperia -V-Keyboard

The only criticism is that we make it is misconfigured on first launch. Indeed, the "." Button is not present, and we must seek in Settings to activate it. While we are French, the arrangement with foreign characters is not enabled by default. These are certainly annoy details but, especially as Madame Michu to simply ignore its existence.
Sony-Xperia-V-Timescape-PlaystationStore
TimeScape and coSony Xperia Z on completely abolished TimeScape. Knowing that the Xperia V initially was presented as Ice Cream Sandwich, it is the last to integrate this functionality was present for the Xperia X10. The particularity of this application is to bring together in one place all your feeds (Facebook / Twitter / Foursquare), your messages, calls and third party applications through news sites and many others.

It seems that Sony has finally listened to us as a shortcut to download PlayStation Mobile is integrated. The application is certainly not installed on the phone, but it is a step forward because on other models requires the Google search page.Apart from this Seller's PlayStation Mobile is pretty well stocked with lots of games and applications. The only regret we have is that the offer is almost exclusively paid and there is no opportunity to try before finalizing the purchase.ConnectivityOn the phone (calls and SMS / MMS), we did not encounter any problems during our test. Sony emphasizes the integration of HD Voice on the terminal, but the use we have not seen dramatic changes. However on the 3G connectivity, the Xperia V has not lived up to. Where all other phones in our previous tests were 3G at specific locations, the Xperia V is often remained with Edge very difficult to truly capture the 3G. The phone supports LTE ("4G") but with no appropriate package, we were not able to test this on the Xperia V.Sony-Xperia-V-Telephonie
Sony Xperia-V-Telephony

The software part is interesting because it changes intelligently Google applications. For example writing MMS you can draw easily insert your position ... The phone application / Contacts stands with the integration of Facebook inside Xperia which gives some additional information on the contacts.InternetChrome is the default browser on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). The majority of manufacturers continue to integrate the parallel old browser, which allows them to differentiate themselves through their own optimizations. Sony has not made that choice and prefers to rely on a strong value: Google Chrome.Sony-Xperia-V-Internet
Sony Xperia -V-Internet

MultimediaPhotos and videosThe Sony Xperia V features a 13 megapixel camera sensor Exmor R. Type Unlike Xperia Z which offers Exmor RS, it is not possible to turn the HDR videos. Moreover, if we compare the quality of these two sensors, the Exmor RS is a little ahead. The Camera application has been redesigned and is distinguished by its fluidity, close to 60 frames per second, which no other manufacturer comes to the moment. But knowing that Sony is both the supplier of sensor and load the application, it is clear that the company makes the most of its technology. This new application, there is a "Automatic top" as the Sony cameras. He chose you all the settings and even active HDR if necessary. Classic mode is still present, but can not choose a scene, as a third way to deal with this task.Screenshot_2013-03-07-17-15-02

Two problems arise, however, detract from the experience:- By trying to focus by pressing the screen, nothing happens. Must then press and hold the shutter button makes it virtual (this problem has disappeared by resetting the phone).- When the application is opened from the unlock screen and the mode is changed (for example changing video), the application quits and returns to the unlock screen. Must then unlock the screen to use this feature. Both bugs are really annoying when using the camera and hopefully a fix will come soon.Aside from these problems, the pictures are of good quality as you can see below. Note, however, many use the application as an adjustment to the other differences are significant. Superior Auto mode, which should normally offer the best compromise is in most cases far from its promises. It is preferable to use the normal mode or scene mode.In low light, it is logically ahead of the Nokia Lumia 920, but offers quality photo absolutely allowing to distinguish different objects / characters in the scene.

Regarding the video, the phone can perform content in 1080p at 30 fps. Our rapid tests, we noticed a good quality, but depends primarily on the selected scene.GalleryLike all models Xperia 2012, Sony embarked his three world around the photo, music and video. Three applications are available and include all players and DLNA media server in order to communicate with another compatible device (TV, NAS, PC ...). Applications are also compatible with the "Throw" which can read the contents on external devices via a wireless connection (usually Bluetooth). The Gallery app for Android has greatly improved, but Sony offers a true picture of the world around had to do better (and the bet is successful). It comes in first on a grid of images that respond to the particularity of pinch-to-zoom, so you can have one or more lines of images. Two fingers can also be used to shoot photos in real time (which is very functional gadget). Swipant in from the edge to the center of the screen, then you make a zoom or a die-zoom.Sony-Xperia-V-Galerie

By clicking a photo, you can share it with Android function or change it. In this case, it will be the photo-editing application for Android to be launched. On the "My Albums" you can browse the contents of your Facebook account, Picasa, but PlayMemories (5 GB in the cloud free). You can also see where the photos were taken either on a Google map or on a globe. In the second case, the pictures are grouped by country, which greatly limits its interest. For photos Facebook, you have the option to liker to comment, but also download them.MusicThe Music app is probably the most successful phone. We find the classical sorting by songs, albums or artists, but Sony adds his two cents with SensMe which offers playlists according to mood (energetic, relaxing, cheerful, dance ...) or the integration of Music Unlimited ( Spotify-like the Sony). You also have access to music from your friends on Facebook or content that you can draw in DLNA.Sony-Xperia-V-Walkman

Noise level in addition to providing an equalizer, Sony puts the package on improvement:

PerformanceThe Sony Xperia V is extremely fluid and dual-core architecture has at no time shown its weakness. Thanks to Project Butter Google, it becomes difficult to find the train interface. You are still many of us ask for the results of the benchmarks phones. This is enough to meet your needs:

AnTuTu: 10525

Smartbench: 3416 productivity - 2941 involvedAutonomyRegarding autonomy, the Xperia V fared better than the Xperia Xperia Z and T. It is at the Xperia Ion, that is to say, it is largely a day with normal usage, but it will be difficult to ask for more. The unbeatable Galaxy Note (1 and 2) still has a bright future ahead of him.

Conclusion

Design:Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

As the Xperia T on V Xperia, Sony has taken the curved design of the Xperia Arc. The plastic is of good quality, but we regret that the volume control button is too small and too close to the On / Off. Some also regret the absence of a trigger for the camera.

Display:Rating: ★ ★ ★ ½ ☆

The screen is of good quality from the moment it is compared with the competition. It turns out worse than other models from Sony and on some points distanced by technology AMOLED and IPS.

Camera:Rating: ★ ★ ★ ½ ☆

The Sony Exmor R sensor is embedded in many smartphones today and the comparison is not in favor of Sony. We regret that the application is also bugged.

Performance:Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

The processor used in the Xperia V is more efficient than the Xperia T, S4 with a Qualcomm MSM8960. The user experience is fluid, especially as the Jelly Bean Butter Project are integrated automatically.

Software:Rating: ★ ★ ★ ½ ☆

Sony ecosystem is successful because it adapts perfectly to the theme based Android. The software package developed by Sony is both coherent and responsive, especially the part Walkman / Albums / Movies.Compared to Xperia Z, there are many more fixes (restarts ...) and if we add the bloatwares on the shelf, the Xperia V is not the best we've seen Sony.

Autonomy:Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

On all Sony we tested their autonomy was not positive. Here V Xperia fared a little better, helped by a processor and software components optimized by the brand.

Final note:Rating: ★ ★ ★ ½ ☆

The Sony Xperia V is not a bad phone, as he embarks beautiful technology (dual-core processor, 4.3 inch Bravia Engine ...), but the overall result is questionable. The software part is identical to that of the Xperia Z, but it turns out to be less stable.Another negative point about this phone is the price. Sold for 529 € it is extremely expensive considering the benefits delivered. High-end features like the LG Optimus G are in this price range and are much better, both on the hardware and on the software side more worked (even though it will probably never be updated). The element for the Xperia V is its LTE connectivity, but the competition is now ready with similar terminals: F5 LG Optimus, Samsung Galaxy Express and many others who have much lower prices for similar services. In the end the fact that V is launched Xperia reassures us on the sly, because this phone does not deserve a great show because of weaknesses that we have discussed.

  1. I disagree. For example, the R sensor is in practice much better tan sensor RS. If you had tested xperia V and xperia Z as many times i did it you would discover than RS is only a comercial idea that actually Works much worse than R sensor. You can appreciate this at night. Second: F5 Lg for example dont even have a flash!! Besides V is waterproof!! I think xperia V is the best Smartphone nowadays
